CLEMSON, S.C. - Facing its stiffest competition of the season, the Charlotte 49ers track and field teams rose to the challenge and set or tied four school records at this weekend's Clemson Invitational. Teams competing included Clemson, Georgia Tech, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Georgia, Alabama and Florida State.
Sharonda Johnson posted an NCAA qualifying mark and finished third in the triple jump with a distance of 42-3.25. Her mark exceeded the previous school record by more than a foot and a half and is the best in Conference USA this season. She is ranked ninth nationally. Adrienne Barnette tied her own and Johnson's school record of 5-8 in the high jump to place third. Her height matched the league's season-best, headed into the weekend.
Derrick Johnson led the men's team. He broke his own school records in both the 60- and 200-meter dashes. He won both events with times of 6.77 and 21.54 seconds, respectively, and finished just short of NCAA qualifying marks.
Charlotte will split the team next weekend, sending representatives to the UNC Invite and the Appalachian State Open.
