BLACKSBURG, Va. - Led by Will Montgomery's NCAA provisional qualifying mark in the long jump, the Charlotte 49ers track and field teams began the 2001 indoor season in earnest this weekend at Virginia Tech's Kroger Invitational.
Montgomery finished second in the long jump, covering a distance of 25'4.75". In addition to his mark, the men's team broke school records in three events. Twann Atkins and Brandon Isaac each set a new school record in the 60-meter hurdles. Isaac initially set the record on Friday in the preliminary round with a time of 8.08. Atkins tied the mark Saturday in the finals to finish third overall. Matt Rausch broke a pair of his own records. He won the shot put with a throw of 56'8.5" then finished fourth in the weight throw with a 58'3.25" toss.
On the women's side, Adrienne Barnette set a new school record in the high jump. She cleared a height of 5'6.5" to finish sixth.
Charlotte returns to action next weekend, when they compete at the ETSU Invitational Jan. 26-27.
