Charlotte Softball Locks In Six Newcomers

People watch with baited breath as National Signing Day comes and goes and this year the Charlotte 49ers Softball Coaching Staff is proud to announce the addition of six student-athletes to the signing class of 2009. Former Charlotte 49ers golfer Jeff Curl is among approximately 156 participants, ready to compete in this week's final stage of the 2008 National Qualifying tournament at PGA West - Nicklaus Tournament Course and PGA West TPC Stadium Course in hopes of earning a 2009 PGA TOUR Card. Ashley Spriggs Named A-10 Player of the Week

Charlotte 49ers women's basketball's junior forward Ashley Spriggs was named Atlantic 10 Player of the Week for the first time in her career after her performance last weekend in the Hoops For the Cure Tournament in Dallas, Texas. Spriggs is the fourth different 49er to earn A-10 Player of the Week honors and the first since Sabrina Gregory earned her third career A-10 Player of the Week award, January 14, 2007. Women's Tennis Team Recognized as All-Academic by ITA

Charlotte's women's tennis team was recognized as a 2008 All-Academic Team and six student-athletes from the men's and women's teams were recognized individually as Scholar-Athletes recently by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. Read Full Release

Named MVP of the Hoops For the Cure Tournament after leading the 49ers to their first tournament title in seven years with wins over 2008 NCAA Tournament participants Fresno State and SMU. She recorded her first two career 20-point scoring games in the tournament. Spriggs connected on the game-winning free throws in the 49ers victory over Fresno State. Then, she knocked down the game-winning shot at the buzzer in the 49ers Championship game win over the host SMU Mustangs. She also scored 10 points and grabbed seven rebounds against ACC foe Wake Forest last Wednesday. In the 49ers three games last week, she averaged 16.7 points and seven rebounds.

Top Performances

Corey Nagy, Golf - Finished 4th at four-under par at the Annual Western Refining all-America Classic in El Paso, Texas.
Athletic Foundation - Raised 100,000 dollars and attracted a record 600 attendees to the 5th annual “Let Me Play” luncheon.
Aysha Jones, Women's Basketball - Scored a career-high 29 points against Wake Forest, which is the most point scored by a 49er since November 23, 2004

Basketball Teams Celebrate Holiday Weekend in Road Tournaments

Notes:

  • The Charlotte 49ers men's and women's basketball teams hit the road this Holiday weekend in road hoops tournaments.
  • The women's team (3-2) travels to Dallas, Texas for the Hoops for the Cure Tournament.
  • They will take on Fresno State Friday, with a match-up versus SMU or Sam Houston State on Saturday.
  • The men (1-3) are in Anaheim, California for the 76 Classic, down the street from Disneyland.
  • They will face No. 14 Arizona State Thursday night at 9 p.m. Eastern on ESPNU. Friday, the men will take on either Providence or Baylor on an ESPN network, depending on Thursday outcomes. Their final game of the weekend will be Sunday with the opponent TBA.

In a preseason survey, the women's basketball team noted that the team's best cook is Erin Floyd. So far this season, she's cooking on the court as Charlotte's second-leading scorer (13 points per game) and second-best shooter from the field (53%).
