Charlotte, N.C. - As this school year draws to an end, local student athletes have an opportunity to fine-tune their skills at a number of athletic camps offered on-campus by various Charlotte 49ers athletic teams.
Beginning this week, boys and girls of all ages may train with a collegiate coaching staff and learn what it takes to be a college-level competitor. The 49ers are offering several camp sessions in a variety of sports including basketball, volleyball, tennis, cross country, soccer, softball and baseball. Each camp will emphasize the skills, training and nutrition necessary in becoming a competitive athlete. Each athlete will be trained by skilled professionals, with some camps having as little as seven students to every instructor.
Such is the case at this summer's Charlotte basketball academy, in which boys ages 8 -to-17 will train the 49ers Halton Arena. Halton Arena features 12 collegiate glass backboards, four full courts, a fully equipped weight room and a fully-staffed Olympic-size swimming pool. New this year are two offensive skills clinics in which students will receive highly individualized instruction, with a focus on such skills as shooting, ball handling and passing. Similarly, the 49ers women's basketball camps will target fundamentals in camps for individuals and teams. The team jamboree camp allows high school teams to compete in two one-day jamborees officiated by college officials.
The John Tart Soccer Academy offers junior and senior advanced camping programs for boys, ages 9- to-18, with specialized training sessions available for goalkeepers. John Tart, the 49ers men's soccer head coach of eight years, will conduct the camp. Similarly, young female soccer players ranging from ages 10-to-18 will be trained by the 49ers women's soccer coaching staff, supervised by head coach Neil Roberts, the 2003 Conference USA coach of the year. Both the boys and girls soccer camps also offer day camps for elementary school children as young as six.
These summer camps pose a positive alternative to the usual summer programs, allowing young athletes to utilize their skills during the off season. Specialization within each sports' training allows the athletes an opportunity to discover their strengths and weaknesses. Whether it be cross country lessons in stretching and developing racing strategies or individual volleyball clinic series on setting, hitting and defense, campers will have a versatile education in their respective sports.
Almost all of the summer sporting programs offered by the 49ers have both residential and commuter options available for parents with overnight preferences. As a result, there are adjustments in the cost for commuters and residents who will stay in the campus dorm for the duration of the camp. Other discounts may also be available for early registration, teams, and same-household campers.
