|Basen Awarded NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship|
Charlotte 49er infielder and graduate Shane Basen (Waxhaw, N.C. / Marvin Ridge HS) was one of 58 student-athletes nationwide selected to receive an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship from the 2012-13 spring-sports season. The NCAA selects 29 men and 29 women each fall, winter, and spring to bestow the one-time $7,500 grant for study toward a graduate degree at the university or professional school of their choice.
Charlotte baseball’s second two-time Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-American, Basen earlier this year became the fifth 49er to earn one of four Atlantic 10 Conference $5,000 Postgraduate Scholarships. He will utilize his scholarships in addition to the graduate assistantship awarded by Charlotte to attend Charlotte’s Master’s of Accountancy Program with the goal of pursuing a career as a Certified Public Accountant.
Basen was a captain on the 49ers baseball team, and graduated with degrees in Accounting and Finance. He was named Second-Team All-Senior CLASS, earning a spot in the final 10 baseball players nationwide for that award. He was selected to the First-Team Capital One Academic All-America list in 2013, after a Second-Team selection in 2012. A three-time member of the Atlantic 10 All-Academic Team and a four-year member of the A-10 Commissioner’s Honor Roll, Basen also was on the Chancellor’s List (3.8 grade point average or higher) in all four years at Charlotte.
Basen was involved in multiple business and marketing associations, including serving as a member of the UNC Charlotte Business Honors Program and the Deloitte Local Leadership Conference. A standout athlete, he was named Second Team All-Conference as a junior and made the All-Championship team as a freshman.
In 2013, Basen paced the 49ers with 49 runs batted in, second-most in the conference.
The former Marvin Ridge High Maverick started all but one game either at third base or shortstop for Charlotte in the past two-plus seasons, including the last 150 Charlotte contests. Basen started a total 198 games and played in 10 more. He finished his career tied for the fifth-most triples (11) in team history, eighth in defensive assists (494), 11th in games started and tied for 12th in games played. He is also in the Top 20 in program history in RBI (17th, 143) and stolen bases (tied-18th, 41).
Basen is the latest in a number of recent Charlotte scholarship winners receiving grants from the NCAA, including Macey Ruble (2012, track and field), Jane Daniels (2007, cross country) and Zvi Lantsberg (2006, men’s tennis).
