Charlotte junior third baseman Shane Basen (Waxhaw, N.C. / Marvin Ridge HS) was today named to the Capital One Academic All-America® First Team. A Second-Team member in 2012, Basen becomes the second player in team history to be named an Academic All-American in back-to-back seasons (Steve Wagoner was a Second-Team member in 1987 and 1988.) The team was selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Basen had earlier in 2012 and 2013 been named Academic All-District Three, the sixth player in team history to earn that honor, advancing him to the national ballot. He was named to the last three Atlantic 10 Academic All-Conference teams.

Basen sports a 3.97 grade point average in double majors of accounting and finance, in addition to leading the team and finishing second in the Atlantic 10 Conference with 49 RBI. He was second on the team and tied for third in the A-10 with 45 runs scored, finishing second at Charlotte and tying for sixth in the conference with 75 hits for the year. He was the only 49er to turn in a five-RBI game in 2012, and was just one of two to drive in five runs in a game in 2013, thanks to a grand slam he hit on his birthday in Charlotte’s final win of 2013, a 12-3 win in the Atlantic 10 Conference Tournament over Xavier on 5/24. It was the only grand slam of his career and the only homer of eight total for his career that he hit at home. The Waxhaw, N.C. native led the team by going 5-for-5 with the bases loaded, driving in a team-high 13 runs in those situations this season. He twice won Player of the Week in the A-10 last season, and was named Co-Player of the Week this season on February 25.

Basen has been on the Chancellor's List in all eight semesters at Charlotte and is a three-time Academic All-Conference selection, finishing his college career with one B grade to go with all A’s. The former Marvin Ridge High star started all but one game either at third base or shortstop for Charlotte in the past two-plus seasons, including the last 150 Charlotte contests. Basen started a total 198 games and played in 10 more. He finishes his career tied for the fifth-most triples (11) in team history, eighth in defensive assists (494), 11th in games started and tied for 12th in games played. He is also in the Top 20 in program history in RBI (17th, 143) and stolen bases (tied-18th, 41). He is on the list of 10 finalists for the Senior CLASS Award, which will be announced in June.

Basen is Charlotte's 40th Academic All-American, and the 49ers have had a student-athlete achieve this honor for eight straight seasons. The 49ers had 10 Academic All-Americans before 2002, when the Athletic Academic Center opened, with 30 nods to 17 different student-athletes in 12 of the past 13 seasons. Basen is the 11th student-athlete at Charlotte to win multiple Academic All-America awards.

He is enrolled in graduate school at Charlotte in accounting this fall and has received a scholarship from Deloitte & Touche as well as a Graduate Assistantship with the Accounting Department at Charlotte.

Capital One became the entitlement rights holder to CoSIDA's Academic All-America teams programs in 2011.
