Charlotte 49ers golfers Will Golden, Rafael Guerrero and Olafur Loftsson were named Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholars by the GCAA, Wednesday.
The trio led the 49ers to a sixth straight Atlantic 10 Championship and a seventh straight berth in the NCAA Tournament, this past year. Golden, a senior, topped the team with a 72.51 stroke average and placed 10th at the A-10 Championships to earn his 7th straight top 20 finish of the season. Loftsson, a junior, owned a 73.52 stroke average. A participant in the World Amateur Team championships last fall for his native Iceland, Loftsson placed sixth at the A-10 Championship. Guerrero, also a junior, placed 7th at the A-10 Championship and had a stroke average of 75.16.
Golden, who was named to the A-10 all-Academic team, earned his second all-America Scholar Award while Loftsson and Guerrero were was tabbed for the first time. Guerrero joined Golden on the 2011 A-10 all-Academic Team.
Charlotte was one of eight schools nationwide to land three all-America Scholars on the list. Of those, only four, including Charlotte, advanced to the 2011 NCAA Div. I Men's Golf Tournament: Iowa, Ohio State, TCU (4).
Charlotte has produced at least two Cleveland Golf/Srixon all-America Scholars in each of the last six years (list below).
To be eligible for Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholar status an individual must be a junior or senior academically, compete in at least two full years at the collegiate level, participate in 70-percent of his team's competitive rounds or compete in the NCAA Championships, have a stroke-average under 76.0 and maintain a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.2 A recipient must also be of high moral character and be in good standing at his college or university. A total of 138 players were named in Division I.
