|49ers Add Game At Big 12's Kansas State in 2016|
Charlotte 49ers head football coach Brad Lambert has announced that the 49ers have scheduled a road game against a Bowl Championship Series (BCS) contender for 2016.
Charlotte will travel to Lambert's alma mater, Kansas State of the Big 12, Sept. 10, 2016 in Manhattan, Kansas.
The 49ers, who begin play in 2013 as a Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) independent, will move to Conference USA in 2015 to compete as a member of the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS).
"We know those guys out there and we've talked about scheduling a game and it's worked out," Lambert said. "Things really changed when we joined Conference USA. They had expressed interest when we were FCS, but I don't know if it would have happened without us going to Conference USA and the FBS. It will be a good homecoming for me and (Director of Operations) Trevor (Lambert)."
Kansas State is 11-1 in 2012. They won the Big 12 title and are ranked 5th in the BCS Standings. They will play #4 Oregon in the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl, Jan. 3
"What coach (Bill) Snyder has done there is beyond phenomenal," said Lambert, a 1987 graduate of Kansas State who was a second team all-Big Eight Defensive Back in 1984. "It will be a lot of fun. Talk about competing at the highest level. It will be a huge challenge for us, but it's something we'll look forward to. It will be exciting for our guys to go and compete at that level."
The Charlotte 49ers, who recently completed their on-campus 15,300-seat football stadium, finished their fall practice season, Nov. 17, in that stadium.
The schedule for the 2013 inaugural season is complete.
The 49ers have other games already scheduled with power conference ties: a home-and-home series with the Big East's Temple in 2015 and 2016 and a game at the ACC's Virginia Tech in 2019.
