After taking over the Charlotte 49ers head coaching position nearly a year and half ago, head coach Brad Lambert finally stood before a group of 85 49ers football players on a football field. The team's first workout was held, today -- with a heavy dose of conditioning drills that will make up the bulk of the workouts for the next three weeks.
"It was fun just being out here," said 49ers head coach Brad Lambert. "We wanted to condition the guys and teach them a little bit about what practice is going to look like. You've got to teach them everything. You've got to start at square one. That's what we did today."
The workout began at 3:00 p.m. sharp and lasted 45 minutes before the team huddled around Lambert for a quick recap.
"Today was a great day for all of us," said freshman receiver Will Thomas, the first official signee for the 49ers back in February. "We've got to take it step by step. You've got to crawl before you walk so we're doing it baby steps. It's very beneficial. We're getting a whole year to get acclimated to the playbook."
Strength and conditioning coach Jim Durning led the team through the initial drills before the group broke up by position for drills led by the individual position coaches.
"Day One, fellas. Push yourselves. The only way to get better is to push yourselves," assistant coach Joe Tereshinski urged the receivers.
Charlotte will continue to practice throughout the 2012 season in preparation for the inaugural 2013 season. Lambert expects to have conditioning workouts for the next three weeks before starting full-fledged football practices.
Today, the conditioning and teaching began.
"Everybody's still getting to know each other," added Lambert. "It was the first day -- it was good."
Today's workouts were held on the practice fields adjacent to the soon-to-be-completed 15,300 seat stadium. Meanwhile at the stadium site, installation of the synthetic turf, which began Aug. 23, continued.
The Charlotte 49ers will play its inaugural game vs. Campbell, Aug. 31, 2013 -- giving the 49ers a full season of practices and workouts before starting competition.
