Charlotte 49ers head men's basketball coach Alan Major announced the hiring of Orlando Vandross as assistant basketball coach, April 15, 2010. He was hired along with Ryan Odom as the first members of Major's staff. Vandross coached for 13 years at Boston University, including his last three as Associate Head Coach, and is now in his third year with the 49ers staff. Vandross is a 1992 graduate of American International College (AIC) in Springfield, Mass. He joined BU's staff in 1997-98 and spent 13 years there: three as associate head coach and 10 as assistant coach. He helped the Terriers to four postseason appearances, including one NCAA Tournament and three National Invitation Tournaments. He has also coached four America East Rookies of the Year, including the last three, and nine first team all-America East choices. "I've known Orlando for almost 15 years. He's a great friend, an outstanding coach and he's a terrific recruiter," Major said, noting Vandross' ties to the northeast region. "He's a dedicated family man and he brings that same dedication to the 49ers." Prior to his start at BU, Vandross served as an assistant coach at Massasoit Community College for one season. Vandross was as an assistant coach at Brockton (Mass.) High School in 1995-96. He also has been involved at the state and AAU levels. He spent the 1993 and 1994 seasons as head coach of the South Shore Tigers AAU team and was head coach of the Coastal Region team at the 1996 Bay State Games. "Looking forward to this 2012-2013 season," Vandross said. "I am excited about our players and their dedication to improve on and off the court. More importantly, I am excited about working for Coach Major as we go into our third season here at Charlotte." Vandross, who ranks 13th in scoring at AIC, is third on the career assists list with 597 dishes. Vandross and his wife, Deirdre, have twins, Darius Christian and Madison Victoria.
