Charlotte, NC – The Conference USA Champion Charlotte 49ers men’s soccer team, who has played in the NCAA Tournament in four of the last five years, face another difficult schedule in 2014 featuring six 2013 NCAA Tournament teams. The 49ers welcome back 15 letterwinners off a 2013 team that captured the Conference USA Tournament title and earned a national seed for the NCAA Tournament.
"We are very excited to announce our 2014 schedule,” said Charlotte coach Kevin Langan, who is entering his third season at the helm of the 49ers men’s soccer program. “This challenging schedule is in keeping with the tradition here at Charlotte, in order to prove yourselves as a top team you have to go and beat top teams.
Charlotte, who has made nine NCAA Tournament appearances and two trips to the College Cup, begins the season with two exhibition road games. First, the 49ers play UNC Asheville on the road, Wednesday, August 20. Then, the 49ers play cross-county foe Davidson on the road in their final exhibition game, Saturday, August 23 at 7 pm.
The 49ers kick off the regular-season at home at Transamerica Field, Sunday, August 31 against Radford. Then, the 49ers continue their season-opening two match home stand when they host 2013 NCAA Tournament participant Coastal Carolina, Friday, September 5. This game is a rematch of last season’s second round NCAA Tournament match.
Then, Charlotte plays two straight games on the road. First, the 49ers play at UNC Greensboro, Tuesday, September 9. Charlotte plays Winthrop on the road, Saturday, September 13. The 49ers return home to play Wofford, who won the Southern Conference regular-season title last season, Monday, September 15. Charlotte returns to road with a game at Campbell, Saturday, September 20. The 49ers conclude the month of September with two home matches against 2013 NCAA Tournament participants. First, the 49ers begin Conference USA play at home against 2013 College Cup participant New Mexico, who is an affiliate member of Conference USA for men’s soccer, Friday, September 26. Then, the 49ers conclude the month of September with a home match against 2013 NCAA Tournament participant William & Mary, Tuesday, September 30.
The 49ers begin the month of October with two road matches in the state of South Carolina. First, the 49ers play Conference USA foe South Carolina, who is an affiliate member of Conference USA for men’s soccer on the road, Saturday, October 4. Then, the 49ers play 2013 NCAA Tournament participant Clemson on the road, Tuesday, October 7. Charlotte begins a stretch of four straight Conference USA matches when they return to Transamerica Field to play FIU, Saturday, October 11. Then, Charlotte plays 2013 NCAA Tournament participant Old Dominion on the road, Saturday, October 18. The 49ers continue Conference USA play on the road at Marshall, Tuesday, October 21. The 49ers return to Transamerica Field to play UAB, Friday, October 24. This match will mark the 49ers seventh game against UAB in the last five years. The 49ers conclude the month of October when they play 2013 NCAA Tournament participant Wake Forest on the road in their final non-conference match, Tuesday, October 28.
Then, the 49ers host Florida Atlantic in their final home game, Saturday, November 1. Charlotte plays Kentucky, who is an affiliate member of Conference USA for men’s soccer, on the road in their final regular-season game, Saturday, November 7.
The 49ers will get their chance to defend their Conference USA Tournament title at the 2014 Conference USA Tournament in Norfolk, Virginia, November 12-16.
