Charlotte's Isaac Cowles has been selected to join the Colorado Rapids of the MLS for preseason training, the team announced Friday. Hundreds applied and sixty were invited to the three-day tryout combine. Cowles was one of only two players to make the final cut.
"I'm just very thankful for the opportunity," said Cowles. "That's what it is right now, another opportunity for me to come out and play my best. I just feel so blessed and thank everybody at the Rapids for this opportunity."
Cowles should feel right at home with the Rapids. The Colorado native went to Faith Christian High School before attending Charlotte for the past four years. Back in December, Cowles started at center back for the 49ers in the NCAA College Cup Final, where Charlotte fell to North Carolina, 1-0. The Arvada, Colo. native played club soccer at Real Colorado.
In addition to being named Most Valuable Defensive Player of the College Cup, Cowles was one of four Niners to be named to the NCAA All-Tournament Team.
Two other 49ers from the 2011 squad, Evan James and Charles Rodriguez, are pursuing careers in professional soccer. Both were selected in the MLS Supplemental Draft, with James being taken by the Montreal Impact and Rodriguez by D.C. United.
