Charlotte, NC - Three members of the College Cup Finalists Charlotte 49ers men's soccer team were named first-team National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) All-Mid-Atlantic Region. Seniors midfielder Evan James and defender Charles Rodriguez and sophomore midfielder Tyler Gibson earned first-team NSCAA All-Mid-Atlantic region honors. This marks the first time in school history, that the 49ers have had three players earn first-team All-Region honors in the same season.
Gibson, James and Rodriguez have played a major role in helping the 49ers reach the College Cup Championship game for the first time in school history.
James, who was a first-team All-Atlantic 10 selection, has played a major role in the 49ers offensive attack this season. He leads the team in assists with seven. He is tied for second on the team with five goals. He scored a goal just 43 seconds into the game in Charlotte's 3-1 NCAA Tournament victory at UAB.
Gibson, who was a first-team All-Atlantic 10 selection, has scored three goals and tallied six assists this season. He scored the game-winning goal against Dayton. He assisted on the game-tying goal against Connecticut in the NCAA Tournament Quarterfinals. He also recorded an assist in the 49ers second-round NCAA Tournament win over UAB.
Rodriguez, who was also a first-team All-Atlantic 10 selection, earned first-team All-Region honors last season. Rodriguez is the first player in school history to earn multiple first-team All-Region honors. Rodriguez plays an integral role on a 49ers defense which has recorded nine shutouts and limited 20 foes to a goal or less this season. Rodriguez scored a goal against St. Bonaventure. He also recorded an assist in the 49ers' victory at Clemson.
Gibson, James, Rodriguez and the rest of the nationally-ranked 49ers men's soccer team plays for the University's first National Championship when they face North Carolina in the College Cup Final, Sunday, December 11.
