St. Louis, MO- Behind a goal by Donnie Smith and another stout defensive effort, the 14th-ranked Charlotte 49ers (11-2-3, A-10: 5-1-1) shutout 13th-ranked Saint Louis (11-4-0, A-10: 5-2-0), 1-0, on the road. With the win, the 49ers moved into a tie for first place in the Atlantic 10 standings with VCU with only two games left in the regular-season.

"This was a quality college soccer game between two very good teams," Charlotte coach Kevin Langan said. "The game went back and forth with both teams controlling the run of play at different times. Donnie Smith scored a beautiful goal. I am very pleased that we recorded another clean sheet."

Giuseppe Gentile sent a beautiful pass across the field toward the 49ers goal. Then, Smith corralled the ball and sent a shot into the back of the net from nine yards out in the 48th minute for the game's only goal.

Saint Louis had a great chance to score in the sixth minute but Alex Sweetin's penalty kick went wide of the goal.

In the first four minutes of the game, Smith and Will Mayhew both had shots but their shots were either wide or blocked. In the 24th minute, Owen Darby placed a shot on goal but it was stopped by Saint Louis' goalkeeper Nick Shackelford. Then, with just under a minute and half left in the first half, Gentile sent a beautiful shot toward the goal but it was stopped by Saint Louis' Shackelford.

After Smith's goal the 49ers had shots taken by Tyler Gibson and Gentile but their shots were either blocked or stopped by Saint Louis' Shackelford.

The 49ers defense was stout behind the play of goalkeeper Klay Davis and defenders Aaron Weldon, Biko Bradnock-Brennan, Thomas Allen, Anthony Perez and David Mayer. Charlotte recorded their eighth shutout of the season.

The 49ers finished the game with seven shots. Smith and Gentile led the 49ers with two shots apiece. The 49ers finished the game with a 10-3 advantage in corner kicks.

Charlotte returns to action when they face Butler on the road, Sunday, October 28 at 1 pm.
