Nationally-ranked 49ers Open A-10 Play On The Road

Charlotte, NC- The nationally-ranked Charlotte 49ers men's soccer team (6-1-2) (12th in College Soccer News, 13th in NSCAA and Soccer America polls) begins Atlantic 10 Conference play this weekend on the road at VCU and Richmond, October 5-7. First, the 49ers play at VCU in their A-10 opener, Friday, October 5 at 7 pm. Then, the 49ers conclude the weekend at Richmond, Sunday, October 7 at 2:30 pm.

For the third straight season, the 49ers begin Atlantic 10 play on the road. Charlotte will begin Atlantic 10 play on the road for the sixth time in the 49ers eight-years in the league. Since 2000, the 49ers are 8-3-1 in their league opener. During that stretch, the 49ers are 8-2-2 in their first league road game. Since joining the Atlantic 10, the 49ers 5-1-1 in their league opening game. Charlotte is 6-1 all-time in their first Atlantic 10 road game. The 49ers have won four straight Atlantic 10 road opening games.

Giuseppe Gentile, who scored the game-tying goal in the 49ers last game a 2-1 double-overtime win at UCF, and Jennings Rex are tied for the team lead in goals with three apiece. Aidan Kirkbride and Donnie Smith have each scored two goals this season. Isaac Caughran, who assisted on Gentile's goal at UCF, leads the team with three assists. Kirkbride, Will Mayhew, Tyler Gibson and Nick Barnhorst are tied for second on the team with two goals apiece. Mayhew, Gibson, Thomas Allen and Anthony Perez have each scored a goal this season as well.

The 49ers defense behind the play of goalkeeper Klay Davis and defenders Allen, Anthony Perez, Nick Barnhorst, David Mayer and Biko Bradnock-Brennan has been stellar this season. The 49ers have only allowed eight goals with three shutouts in over 904 minutes of action this year.

Friday's game will mark the 13th meeting between Charlotte and VCU. The 49ers lead the all-time series, 9-2-1. Charlotte defeated VCU, 2-1, on the road in their last meeting, September 28, 1994.

Sunday's game will mark the seventh meeting between Charlotte and Richmond. Charlotte leads the all-time series, 3-0-3. The 49ers defeated Richmond, 1-0, in overtime on the road in their last meeting, October 17, 2010. Former 49ers standout Andres Cuero scored the game-winning goal in the 94th  minute.
