The nationally-ranked Charlotte 49ers men's soccer team (5-0-2) (5th in College Soccer News, 6th in NSCAA and Soccer America polls) play in-state foe and 2011 NCAA Tournament participant Elon on the road, Saturday, September 22 at 7 pm. For only the second time in school history, the 49ers are undefeated after seven games. Charlotte began the 1991 season undefeated through 16 games with a 13-0-3 mark.
Jennings Rex, who has scored three goals in the 49ers last four games, leads the team in goals with three. Giuseppe Gentile, Aidan Kirkbride and Donnie Smith are tied for second on the team with two goals apiece. Kirkbride, Will Mayhew, Isaac Caughran and Nick Barnhorst are tied for the team lead in assists with two. Thomas Allen, Tyler Gibson and Anthony Perez have each scored a goal this season as well.
The 49ers defense behind the play of goalkeeper Klay Davis and defenders Allen, Anthony Perez, Nick Barnhorst and Biko Bradnock-Brennan has been stellar this season. The 49ers have only allowed five goals with three shutouts in over 712 minutes of action this year.
Saturday's game will mark the 10th meeting between Charlotte and Elon. The 49ers lead the all-time series, 7-2. The 49ers have won the last five meetings between the two teams including the last two games played at Elon. Charlotte defeated Elon, 3-0, on the road in their last meeting, September 9, 2011. In that game, Rex scored two goals and Gibson scored the other goal.
