Charlotte, NC- The nationally-ranked Charlotte 49ers men's soccer team (5-0-1) (4th in College Soccer News, 5th in NSCAA, 8th in Soccer America) play in-state foe UNC Greensboro on the road, Saturday, September 15 at 7 pm.
Jennings Rex, who has scored three goals in the 49ers last three games, leads the team in goals with three. Donnie Smith, who scored a dramatic game-winning goal in the 49ers 3-2 double overtime win over South Carolina, and Aidan Kirkbride are tied for second on the team with two goals apiece. Kirkbride, Will Mayhew and Isaac Caughran are tied for the team lead in assists with two. Thomas Allen, who was just named to College Soccer News' National Team of the Week, Tyler Gibson, Giuseppe Gentile Anthony Perez have each scored a goal this season as well.
The 49ers defense behind the play of goalkeeper Klay Davis and defenders Allen, Anthony Perez, Nick Barnhorst and Biko Bradnock-Brennan has been stellar this season. The 49ers have only allowed four goals and 43 shots with three shutouts in over 600 minutes of action this year.
Saturday's game will mark the 17th meeting between Charlotte and UNC Greensboro. The 49ers lead the all-time series, 8-7-1. Charlotte defeated UNC Greensboro, 1-0, in their last meeting which came at Transamerica Field, September 11, 2011. Caughran scored the game's only goal in that meeting.
