Charlotte, NC- The nationally-ranked Charlotte 49ers men's soccer team (4-0-1) (4th in College Soccer News, 5th in NSCAA, 8th in Soccer America) face long-time foe South Carolina (2-2-1) at Transamerica Field, Wednesday, September 12 at 7 pm.
Aidan Kirkbride and Jennings Rex lead the 49ers in goals with two apiece. Kirkbride scored both of his goals in the 49ers season-opening 2-1 double-overtime win over Denver. While, Rex scored his two goals in the 49ers 3-0 win over Stony Brook. This past weekend, Rex and Kirkbride were both named to the UK Invitational All-Tournament after helping the 49ers capture the Invitational title with wins over Stony Brook and Kentucky. Kirkbride and Will Mayhew are tied for the team lead in assists with two. Kirkbride leads the 49ers in points with six. Thomas Allen, who was just named to College Soccer News' National Team of the Week, Tyler Gibson, Giuseppe Gentile and Donnie Smith have each scored a goal this season as well.
The 49ers defense behind the play of goalkeeper Klay Davis and defenders Allen, Anthony Perez, Nick Barnhorst and Biko Bradnock-Brennan has been stellar this season. The 49ers have only allowed two goals and 32 shots with three shutouts in over 494 minutes of action this year.
Wednesday's game will mark the 22nd meeting between Charlotte and South Carolina. The Gamecocks lead the all-time series 14-4-3. South Carolina is a member of Conference USA for men's soccer so next season the Charlotte-South Carolina game will be a conference game as the 49ers are rejoining Conference USA next year.
Admission to the game is $5 for adults. Charlotte 49ers students (with a valid student ID) and all youth 17-and-under are admitted free.
