|Gentile Scores As 49ers Blank Kentucky, 1-0|
LEXINGTON, KY - Behind a Giuseppe Gentile goal and another solid defensive effort, the seventh-ranked Charlotte 49ers men's soccer team (4-0-1) remained undefeated on the season with a 1-0 victory on the road over Kentucky in the University of Kentucky Invitational. With victories over Stony Brook and Kentucky, the 49ers captured the UK Invitational Tournament title.
For their performance in the Invitational, Jennings Rex, Thomas Allen, Aidan Kirkbride and Biko Bradnock-Brennan earned All-Tournament honors.
"This was a wonderful road win," Charlotte coach Kevin Langan said. "We played unbelievable team defense. We went on the road and recorded two straight clean sheets. Our first four games of the year we played free flowing soccer and today was more of a scrappy game. I am ecstatic that we found another way to win a game."
The 49ers goal came after Kirkbride played a free kick into the box to Gentile in the 26th minute. Then, Gentile beat Kentucky's goalkeeper Callum Irving and put the ball into the back of the net for the game's only goal. Gentile scored his first goal of the season and the 11th of his career. Gentile's game-winning goal was the sixth of his career.
Gentile recorded the 49ers first shot when headed the ball just over the cross bar in the 20th minute.
In the 70th minute, Donnie Smith sent a shot that went just high. In the 83rd minute, Gentile sent a shot that was saved by Kentucky's goalkeeper Jack Van Arsdale. Then, in the 88th minute, Smith had the 49ers last scoring chance but his shot was blocked.
Charlotte's defense was stellar again as they recorded their third shutout of the season behind the stellar goalkeeper Klay Davis and defenders Biko Bradnock-Brennan, Thomas Allen, Nick Barnhorst and Anthony Perez. Davis finished the game with four saves.
Charlotte returns to action when they play South Carolina at Transamerica Field, Wednesday, September 12 at 7 pm.
