Charlotte, N.C.- Coming off a successful debut of the Charlotte 49ers men’s and women’s cross country teams at the Charlotte Invitational last week. Charlotte shifts their focus to the northeast as they run in the Paul Short Run in Bethlehem, Pa.
Charlotte competed at a high level against many of the top teams in several regions last weekend at the Charlotte Invitational. “I am pretty happy about how the team got after it for the gold race,” said Coach Ed Schlichter regarding the Charlotte Invitational. The 49ers finished second and third as a team for the women’s and men’s squads respectively.
The 49ers will do much of the same at the Paul Short Run that features 32 regionally ranked squads on the men’s and 29 squads on the women’s side. The majority of those squads are coming from the Mid-Atlantic region.
The most notable programs competing in this weekend’s Paul Short Run are: La Salle, Indiana, Penn State, Alabama and Georgetown. Charlotte looks to crack into the top 15 in the Southeast region competing against Richmond, Wake Forest and Appalachian State. Those programs are ranked within the Southeast region. “We are going to see a lot of great teams to challenge us and to see where we stand at this time.”
Charlotte also looks to see how Conference USA foes East Carolina and Rice run heading into the Conference USA Championships next month. Marshall competed in the Charlotte Invitational and finished ninth on the men’s side and tenth on the women’s side. “This meet will allow us to see where we rank amongst those teams there and within our conference.”
The Paul Short Run is hosted by Lehigh University. It is the 40th annual meet which features over 400 teams and nearly 5,000 runners. The men’s gold race will begin at 11 am followed by the women’s gold race at 11:45 am.
