CHARLOTTE, N.C.- The 49ers men's and women's cross country team won the second annual Charlotte Duals, earlier Saturday morning at Frank Liske Park.
Despite the humid conditions, Charlotte commanded the race on both sides to lead their team to victories.
The women defeated Wofford 20-39, Gardner-Webb 20-83, and Limestone 20-114.
Senior Hana Sutchar made her second appearance of the 2012 season a memorable one, finishing first overall in the 5K run with a time of 19:10. Freshman Morgan Richards who led Charlotte last weekend at the WCU Invitational, finished second (19:12). Sophomore Chelsea Matson was fourth overall with a time of 19:32 while freshman Lauren Pollard seized sixth (19:35). Taylor Carcella followed in seventh with a time of 19:37.
"I was really impressed with the girls," Head coach Ed Schlichter said. "Hana came out and had a great run for us and her first place finish was amazing. Morgan also did a great job and is continuing to succeed in her young career."
The men defeated Gardner-Webb 20-54 and Limestone 20-64.
Sophomore Zach Greth led the 49ers for the second consecutive meet of the season. He finished the 5K run second overall with a time of 16:00. Charlotte controlled much of the race as it placed all its runners in the top eight.
Freshman Getisso Dentamo was third in his first race of the year with a mark of 16:08. Junior Eleazar Garcia was fourth (16:09), freshman Chris Anderson was fifth (16:11), sophomore Ben Sterett finished sixth (16:14), as Nicholas Rotz (16:16) and Mike Tamayo (16:25) were seventh and eight respectively.
Charlotte turned in a spread of just 14 seconds and averaged a mark of 16:09.
"The men did a good job of staying together," Schlichter said. "I was really pleased with their spread and they used a total group effort."
The 49ers have some time off before they head to the Toledo Regional Bubble Buster meet in Toledo, Ohio on Friday, Sept. 21.
