CHARLOTTE, N.C. - For the first time this season, the Charlotte 49ers women's cross country team has been regionally ranked, the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced Monday. The Niners are ranked 13th in the Southeast Region.
This regional recognition comes on the heels of an excellent Charlotte performance at the NCAA Pre-Nationals meet at Terre Haute, IN this past weekend. The 49ers had their best-ever finish in Pre-Nationals history on Sunday afternoon, placing 15th of 37 teams in a field that featured some serious competition.
Charlotte finished just 26 points shy of La Salle, this year's Atlantic 10 pre-season favorite and seventh-ranked team in the Mid-Atlantic Region. Additionally, the Niners edged Dayton, the #3 predicted A10 finisher and #10 squad in the Great Lakes Region, by seven points. Charlotte also topped several other regionally-ranked teams including Baylor (#7 in the South Central) and Mississippi State (#5 South).
The 49ers are gearing up to host the 2011 Atlantic 10 Championship on Saturday, October 29th. The meet, which will be held at Frank Liske Park in Concord, NC, begins at 10 a.m.
