BOONE, N.C. - The Charlotte 49ers cross country team competed at the Appalachian State Blue Ridge Open in Boone, NC on Friday. In the women's 6K race, junior transfer Maraya Slatter paced the team with a 21st place overall finish in a time of 18:53. Junior Daweet Dagnachew was the top men's finisher for the third straight week, coming in 31st overall with a 25:52 finish in the 8K event.
"Maraya did a great job improving from her performance at the Charlotte Invite and led the team as our top finisher," head coach Ed Schlichter said after the meet.
Also notable on the women's side was Charlotte's Laura McCary. Competing unattached as she has exhausted her cross country eliibility but remains eligible in track & field, McCary finished fifth overall in the women's race, crossing the line in an impressive 18:14.
For the men, Ross Roberson was the second 49ers finisher behind Dagnachew, coming in 52nd overall in a time of 26:18. Dakota Lowery was right behind him, finishing 54th (26:23). Rookie Zach Greth and senior Brian McGuire rounded out the top five Niners, 61st (26:27) and 68th (26:36), respectively.
"The guys competed well, though their times don't quite reflect what they're capable of," Schlichter said. "Daweet did a good job, being our #1 guy for the third straight week."
Charlotte continues competition later on this weekend, as several of the top runners on the women's squad will run in the NCAA Pre-Nationals meet on Sunday. Race time is 11:40 a.m.
