Charlotte, N.C. - Senior Amanda Goetschius has been named the Atlantic 10 women's cross country Performer of the Week, the league announced Monday. This is the first such honor of the 2011 season for Goetschius and the fourth of her career. She was previously selected twice in 2009 and once in 2008, in addition to earning two Rookie of the Week awards as a freshman.
Competing in her first race of the season, Goetschius turned in a 21st place overall finish at the Roy Griak Invitational in Falcon, Heights, Minn. on Saturday. Finishing in a time of 21:15 in the women's 6K event (equivalent to a 17:40 5K pace), the Franklinville, NJ native was the top Charlotte scorer at the Griak Invite, which featured eight nationally-ranked teams and four others receiving votes. As a team, the 49ers finished 21st of 25 squads.
Goetschius, a 2010 All-American in the 5,000-meters who redshirted in cross country last season, has earned multiple accolades during her career as a Niner. She has won multiple Atlantic 10 titles in cross country and track and field, as well as competing for the U.S. in the U-23 NACAC Championships, capturing the bronze medal in the 10,000-meters in 2010.
Goetschius and the rest of the 49ers will race at home this weekend, competing in the third annual Charlotte Cross Country Invitational at McAlpine Park. The women's 5K race is set to begin at 4 p.m., with the men's 8K event following at 4:45 p.m.
