Charlotte, N.C.- In one of the oldest and most prestigious road races in the world, the Boston Marathon has featured several Charlotte 49ers alumni and staff. In the upcoming 2014 Boston Marathon on Monday, April 21, seven members of the Niner family will take to the streets to complete the 26.1 mile marathon.
"We have a rich tradition of alumni participating in the Boston Marathon and it's very exciting to be a part of such a high profile event especially this year," said Ed Schlichter.
Current 49er Cross Country and distance coach, Ed Schlichter heads to Boston, Mass. to compete in the Boston Marathon. Schlichter ran cross country for Charlotte from 2000-2005 and ranks among the top runners in program history. Schlichter ran the Boston Marathon in 2007.
"The crowd there is like nothing else, you feel like a rock star running through the streets of Boston."
Other former Niners running in the Boston Marathon are: Amelia Slagle (graduated in 2007 and currently works for Adidas), David Guerdan (graduated in 2008 and in the US Army), and James Maneval (graduated in 2009 and currently works at CMC-Northeast). Current track and field athlete Tiffany Lang's father, Phil Lang, will be competing in his 48th Marathon.
49ers' staff members Dennis Livesay and Dennis Lubert will also make the journey to Boston to participate in the Boston Marathon. Livesay works in the Bioinformatics Building on campus, while Lubert age 54 works with maintaining facilities and the grounds on campus.
"I'm proud to represent Niner Nation and I look forward to a great event, I wish the best of luck for our Alumni, Employees, and anyone affiliated with UNC Charlotte on Monday."
Several former runners at Charlotte competed in the Boston Marathon last year and finished before the blast took place. Liz Smith, Aaron Kauffman, Josh Baker and David Guerdan finished before the blast.
