Each workday for the next two weeks Charlotte49ers.com will profile a different Conference USA school as a way to introduce our new league opponents starting in 2013-14.
Athletic Highlights: The Rice Baseball team won the 2003 College World Series making them the smallest school in 51 years to win a national championship in Division I. The Owls Baseball team has also won 16 out of the last 17 conference championships. In 2004-05, Rice sent its women's volleyball, soccer, and basketball teams to their respective NCAA tournaments. In 2005-06, the women's soccer, basketball, and tennis teams advanced, and five individuals competed at the national championships in outdoor track and field.
Noteworthy Accomplishments: In 2010, Rice was ranked #1 in materials science research. Rice has a strong relationship with NASA, once serving as a temporary intermediary in the transfer of land between Humble Oil and Refining Company and NASA for the creation of NASA's Manned Spacecraft Center (now called Johnson Space Center) in 1962. In 2011, Rice was ranked 17th Best Colleges in America by U.S. News and World. The Princeton Review ranked Rice 1st for "Best Quality of Life" and "Happiest Students" in its 2012 edition.
