Athletic Highlights: UTEP has won 25 national championships including a men’s basketball title in 1966. They defeated Kentucky in the championship game and became the first national champ to start five African Americans. UTEP remains to be the only Division I university in the state of Texas to win a national championship. UTEP also won 13 men’s track and field titles and seven men’s cross-country titles. In 2007, the Miners posted a perfect score of 15 by claiming each of the top five individual spots to win the C-USA men’s cross country title. In 2013, Anthony Rotich added a national title in the men’s 3,000m steeplechase. In 2012, women’s basketball captured the Conference USA Championship. Both of UTEP’s men’s and women’s basketball teams had a top 100 RPI, last year.
Noteworthy Accomplishments: UTEP was ranked by Washington Monthly magazine #12 in the US for overall impact on students. UTEP recently invested $400 million to build a state-of-the-art facilities in research, teaching, student support and athletics. UTEP is the largest school in the country with a majority of Mexican- Americans.
