BIRMINGHAM, Ala. –
Charlotte will look to end the regular season on the positive side when it faces long-time familiar foe UAB in Birmingham, Ala., at 3 p.m. EST Friday. It is a rescheduled contest for the two programs, who were unable to meet in late January due to inclement weather preventing the 49ers from traveling.
The Niners are seeking an above .500 regular-season ledger, as they bring a 14-14 overall record and 8-7 Conference USA mark into the matchup. Charlotte is coming off a 68-57 setback at Tulsa Wednesday night in which it could not contain a near 55.0 percent shooting performance by the host Golden Hurricane during the second half.
Redshirt junior Gabby Tyler
led the squad with 14 points and nine rebounds, falling one board shy of a double-double for the second-straight outing. On the season, she sets the pace with averages of 12.0 points and 7.5 rebounds.
She continues to be joined by a trio of other players with double-figure scoring averages. Comprising the rest of the quartet are senior Ny Hammonds
(11.5 ppg), sophomore Kira Gordon
(10.7) and junior Hillary Sigmon
Gordon and fellow sophomore Alexis Alexander
are next behind Tyler on the glass, collecting 6.5 and 5.5 per game, respectively.
UAB enters Friday’s meeting with a three-game losing streak after winning four of five prior to the latest run. The Blazers are 15-13 overall and 7-8 in Conference USA under first-year head coach Randy Norton.
Karisma Chapman tops UAB with 20.4 points and 9.6 rebounds per game. Ashley Grimes (14.6 ppg) and Chelsee Black (13.4) are also averaging double figures, while Grimes is also second with 5.3 boards per contest.
The Blazers dropped a 61-51 decision to Rice Wednesday night in their most recent contest, falling to 7-6 this year inside Bartow Arena.
