RUSTON, La. –
Charlotte women’s basketball is back on the road for a rare Thursday Conference USA matchup, as it has traveled to Ruston, La., to meet Louisiana Tech at 9 p.m. EST live on Fox Sports South. It marks the first meeting in the series between the two programs.
The 49ers will be seeking to snap their two-game losing skid, dropping them to 10-11 overall and 4-4 in the league. The latest setback came at the hands of Southern Miss Saturday despite a double-double from sophomore Kira Gordon
, the second of her career. She tallied a team-best 12 points and a career-high 13 rebounds, leading all players on the glass.
Senior Ny Hammonds
added 10 points and seven assists, moving into sole possession of second place on the school’s all-time list. She has handed out 437 assists in her career, standing just five shy of the Niners’ career record held by Markita Aldridge (1992, ’94-96).
Redshirt junior Gabby Tyler
continues to lead Charlotte in scoring and rebounding with averages of 11.9 and 7.4, respectively. She also has a team-best 32 blocked shots and her 53.4 field goal percentage is tops on the squad among players who have attempted at least 50 shots.
Hammonds (11.8 ppg), Gordon (11.4) and junior Hillary Sigmon
(10.2) join Tyler with double-figure scoring averages, while Gordon (6.9 rpg) and sophomore Alexis Alexander
(5.7) are next on the glass.
Louisiana Tech also has lost its most recent two contests entering Thursday, falling on the road to UTEP and Marshall. The Lady Techsters, one of women’s basketball’s most historic programs with three national titles to their credit, are 7-15 overall and 2-7 in Conference USA this year.
La Tech is 7-4 at home, picking up its only two league victories on the Thomas Assembly Center floor.
Whitney Frazier paces hall of fame coach Teresa Weatherspoon’s squad with 16.0 points and 10.0 rebounds. JaQuan Jackson (11.8 ppg), Chrisstasia Walter (11.7) and Lulu Perry (11.1) join her in double-figure scoring, while Walter is next on the rebounding list with 5.7 caroms per outing.
Fox Sports Networks, as part of the Conference USA TV contract, will televise Thursday’s meeting. The game will be shown locally in the Charlotte area on Fox Sports South. The 49ers are just one of two programs, joining Middle Tennessee, to appear two times on the league TV package this season.
Pete Pranica, the play-by-play voice of the NBA’s Memphis Grizzlies, will join color analyst, former Charlotte 49ers men's basketball assistant coach and current member of the Florida broadcast team, Mark Wise, on the call.
Josh Feldman will also have all the action for the Charlotte49ers.com audio feed, returning to his play-by-play duties after manning the same post for the Niners’ TV contest Saturday on WCCB Charlotte.
