|49ers Host Wake Forest In WNIT, Thursday|
The Charlotte 49ers women's basketball team (16-13) plays ACC foe Wake Forest (19-13) in the first round of the Women's National Invitational Tournament (WNIT) in Halton Arena, Thursday, March 15 at 7 pm.
Admission is $6 for adults and $3 for youth (17-and-under). While the first 300 Charlotte 49ers students are admitted free with a valid University student ID.
Charlotte is making their 11th postseason tournament appearance in school history and their tenth consecutive postseason tournament appearance. Last season, Charlotte advanced to the WNIT Final Four for the first time in school history. Charlotte is one of seven Atlantic 10 teams that earned postseason tournament bids.
"We have a great opportunity to continue playing and experience postseason play," Charlotte coach Cara Consuegra said. "Wake Forest will be an outstanding matchup. We are excited about playing in Halton Arena again."
Now we will take a closer look at the 49ers entering the Wake Forest game. Second-team All-Atlantic 10 selection Jennifer Hailey leads the 49ers in scoring at 13.9 points per game. She leads the Atlantic 10 in rebounding at 9.5 boards per game. Amanda Dowe, who averages 6.8 points per game, is second in the Atlantic 10 in rebounding at 8.9 boards per game. A-10 Sixth Player of the Year Epiphany Woodson is second on the team in scoring at 12.7 points per game. Gabby Tyler is third on the team in scoring at 8.0 points per game. She also averages 5.3 boards per game. A-10 All-Rookie team selection Hillary Sigmon, who scored a team-high 16 points in the 49ers last game against Saint Louis, is tied with Jai Forney for fourth on the team in scoring at 7.8 points per game. Forney has started 28 of Charlotte's 29 games this season. Ny Hammonds, who averages 5.1 points per game, leads the team in assists with 107. Hammonds recently became the 18th player in school history to record 100 assists in a season. Ayanna Holmes has started 25 games this season at point guard. Holmes averages 4.1 points per game. Meador averages a career-high 3.8 points per game this season.
Charlotte and Wake Forest have played 11 previous times. Wake Forest has a 7-4 series lead. Charlotte and Wake Forest played in the first round of the 2005 WNIT. Wake Forest won that game at home. Charlotte lost to Wake Forest, 75-67, in their last meeting which came in Halton Arena, November 26, 2009.
