Charlotte, NC - Charlotte 49ers All-Atlantic 10 standout guard Shannon McCallum signed a pro contract with the WNBA's Atlanta Dream, the organization announced today. She joins former 49er standouts Markita Aldridge (Washington Mystics) and Jameka Jones (Miami Sol) that have played in the WNBA.
McCallum, who earned WNIT All-Tournament team honors, played an integral role in helping the 49ers win a school-record 27 games and reach the WNIT Final Four this past season.
"I'm just so happy," McCallum said. "I never thought this day would come. This has always been a dream of mine, ever since I was little. It's just a relief. I did it. I'm here. I'm just so excited to be just the third 49er that gets to play in the WNBA. [Atlanta] can expect hard work. I'll play and play until I can't play anymore."
Last month, McCallum was named second-team All-Atlantic 10 for the second straight season. She earned All-Atlantic 10 honors three times in her career including being named A-10 Sixth Player of the Year in 2009. McCallum also earned NCCSIA All-State honors for the third time in her career.

She was one of three 49ers with 100 assists as she recorded a career-high 108 assists. She finished fourth on the team in rebounding (5.3 rebounds per game) and second in steals (60).
