|Charlotte Tops South Carolina, 69-57, For School-Record 25th Win|
CHARLOTTE, NC - Behind four double-figure scorers, the Charlotte 49ers (25-9) defeated South Carolina (18-15), 69-57, on the road in the second round of the WNIT for their school-record 25th win.
"I am happy for our team," Charlotte coach Karen Aston said. "It was a total team win. I am really proud for our seniors who did not want their season to end. I thought that our guard play was very strong. It was a great team effort."
Shannon McCallum, who set the school-record by playing in her 127th career game, led the 49ers with 21 points. She scored 13 points in the second half. Epiphany Woodson scored 14 points. Kendria Holmes tallied 11 points. Holmes connected on three threes in the game. Jai Forney scored 10 points off the bench with eight of those points coming in the second half.
Over the first 11 minutes of the game, the lead exchanged hands several times with five ties. With the score tied at 12 with 8:56 on the clock, the 49ers scored six straight points behind baskets by Hailey, McCallum and Woodson.
South Carolina cut the 49ers lead to 20-17 with 3:34 left in the first half. Then, Charlotte behind the three-point shooting of Holmes scored 12 of the half's final 19 points taking a 32-24 halftime lead after McCallum scored on a short jump shot with 13 seconds on the clock.
In the second half, with the 49ers leading 37-28 at the 16:59 mark, the 49ers went on a 10-2 run over the next four minutes taking a 47-30 lead when Holmes knocked down a three from in front of Charlotte's bench.
South Carolina scored six of the next eight points cutting the 49ers lead to 49-36 at the 9:27 mark. Then, the 49ers behind the scoring of McCallum pushed their lead to 19 points. McCallum converted a layup with 7:40 on the clock giving the 49ers a 56-37 lead.
The Gamecocks went on an 11-2 run over the next two and half minutes cutting the 49ers lead to 56-47 when Jewel May converted two free throws at the 5:21 mark. Forney scored four straight for the 49ers pushing their lead back to double-figures, 62-47, with 4:19 on the clock.
South Carolina cut the 49ers lead to 14 points with 4:17 on the clock. However, Charlotte behind the scoring of McCallum and Forney pushed their lead to a game-high 20 points. McCallum connected on a three as the shot clock was expiring with 2:57 on the clock giving the 49ers a 68-48 lead.
South Carolina scored nine of the game's final 13 points cutting the 49ers final margin of victory to 69-57.
The 49ers will now face the winner of tomorrow night's game between Florida and Florida Gulf Coast in the third round of the WNIT.
