|Homestand ends Saturday for 49ers women’s hoops|
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Charlotte women’s basketball will look to continue the momentum it has built in the 2014 calendar year when it plays host to North Texas at 7 p.m. Saturday in a Conference USA matchup. The contest will be the final contest in a season-long four-game homestand for the 49ers.
The 49ers have won both of their games in 2014 and three of their last four overall, raising their season record to 7-7 and 1-0 in Conference USA. Charlotte has tallied 70 or more points five-straight times and six of the last seven dating back to the start of December 2013.
An 80-59 triumph over Old Dominion Wednesday opened conference action. The Niners were led by freshman Lefty Webster’s career-best 13 points, while senior Ny Hammonds and junior Hillary Sigmon moved into fourth place in the school’s record book for career assists and 3-pointers made, respectively.
Hammonds owns the team’s top scoring average entering Saturday at 12.2 points per game as one of three Charlotte players to be in double figures. Sophomore Kira Gordon’s 11.9 and Sigmon’s 10.4 join Hammonds to round out the trio.
Redshirt junior Gabby Tyler hauls in a team-best 7.2 rebounds per outing, a full board more than the 6.2 averages from Sigmon and sophomore Alexis Alexander.
In addition to Webster’s career high Wednesday, fellow rookies Meme Garner added a career-best four points and Tanisha Brown earned her first trip to the foul line, as the 49ers were 28-of-40 at the charity stripe, led by Hammonds’ 12-of-15.
North Texas, under the direction of second-year head coach Mike Petersen, is 6-8 overall and 0-1 in C-USA heading into Saturday. The Mean Green, in their first season in the league, closed the non-conference campaign with a 69-41 triumph over Cameron before falling to preseason Conference USA favorite Middle Tennessee Wednesday, 86-42.
NT boasts no double-digit scorers; however, the very balanced attack is led by Briesha Wynn’s 9.6 average. She edges out a 9.5 mark from Acheil Tac, while Janis Peterson and Alexis Hyder are shortly behind with 8.9 and 8.8 points per game, respectively.
Tac is the team’s top rebounder at 7.9 per contest with Wynn and Hyder grabbing rebounds at a 5.5 per game clip.
Saturday’s game will be the first in the series between the two programs.
