|Seniors look to leave with win streak record|
CHARLOTTE, N.C. - One last time in the regular season the Charlotte women's basketball team will play on the Halton Arena floor when it plays host to Atlantic 10 newcomer VCU at 7 p.m. Thursday. It will be Senior Night for the 49ers program as it looks to make history once again.
Charlotte has won its last 11 games, tying the school record, to raise its overall record to 22-4 and Atlantic 10 mark to 11-1. The 49ers have equaled the 11-game run established by two other teams with the last stretch coming between Dec. 8, 1979, and Jan. 21, 1980.
The Niners have only dropped one contest since the calendar flipped to 2013 and own victories in 14 of their last 15 outings to remain just a game shy of first place in the conference race entering Wednesday. Charlotte has clinched a first-round bye for the upcoming Atlantic 10 Tournament, assuring itself of a top-four seed for the first time since 2010.
Prior to Thursday's tip the athletic department and women's basketball program will take a moment to honor and recognize this year's senior class as they play their final regular-season home game in front of Niner Nation and inside Halton Arena. Amanda Dowe, Jai Forney and Jennifer Hailey comprise this year's group. Manager Corey Grady will also be included in the ceremony.
Hailey tops the team with her averages of 16.0 points and 12.2 rebounds, including 12-straight double-doubles. The Atlantic 10 Player of the Year candidate needs two more blocked shots to tie her own single-season school record, established last year.
Dowe also averages a double-double with 10.6 points and 11.0 rebounds per contest, making the 49ers pair the only set of teammates nationally to accomplish the feat. The duo comprises two of just 37 players on the national list to currently average a double-double.
Forney adds 9.1 points and 4.0 rebounds per game but her 71 assists and 38 steals both place her second on the squad. She also is the only other player besides Hailey and Dowe to grab triple-figure rebounds for the season, hauling in 103.
VCU owns a 10-17 overall and 3-9 A-10 ledger heading into the matchup, having lost its last two. The Rams, newcomers to the conference this season, have picked up league victories at Temple, at St. Bonaventure and over La Salle.
Robyn Parks guides coach Marlene Stollings' squad with 18.1 points and 8.0 rebounds, including a 29-point, 20-rebound effort last week in a loss at Richmond. Jessica Pellechio joins her in double-figure scoring with a 10.6 average, including a team-high 64 3-pointers.
Charlotte carries a 20-8 all-time record against VCU into the meeting. The two teams have a long history of facing one another, dating back to when they were both a member of the Metro Conference from 1991-95. The Niners earned a 68-58 non-conference triumph last season in Richmond.
Josh Feldman will handle play-by-play duties for the Charlotte49ers.com video feed, while live stats will also be available through the website. Updates can also be found on Twitter by following @49erGameDay.
