CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Charlotte women's
basketball team will hit the road for the first time in two weeks when it
travels to Orlando, Fla., to face UCF at 7 p.m. Wednesday. It will mark the
first meeting between the two schools since the 1995-96 campaign.
The 49ers bring a 3-1 record into the contest, having dropped a 67-63 decision
in their last outing to Kansas State Saturday night. Despite the loss, senior
forwards Amanda Dowe and Jennifer Hailey each registered a double-double for
the 10th and 24th of their respective careers.
The pair enter Wednesday's action as the top scoring and rebounding threats for
Charlotte. Dowe averages a team-high 15.8 points and 11.3 rebounds, slightly
ahead of Hailey's 14.5 and 11.0, respectively, thus far.
Junior Ny Hammonds not only leads the squad and Atlantic 10 with 33 assists but
her 8.3 per game average tops the country according to the first weekly NCAA
statistics released Monday. She handed out a career-best nine in Saturday's
contest after distributing eight in each of the season's first three games.
UCF, under the direction of sixth-year head coach Joi Williams, has opened
2012-13 with a 2-5 record. The Knights, who are playing their final season in
Conference USA before moving to the Big East, picked up a 64-56 triumph over
Mississippi State Thursday to conclude play at the Hardwood Tournament of Hope
in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.
Wednesday's meeting kicks off a stretch for UCF in which it will play four of
its next five games inside UCF Arena, a venue in which it has earned a 1-1
record thus far this season.
Briahanna Jackson tops the Knights with 17.0 points per game, one of two
players with a double-figure scoring average. She is joined by Gevenia Carter's
Erika Jones is the squad's top rebounder with 7.0 per contest with Jackson next
at 5.9 per game.
The two teams have played one common opponent, TCU, in back-to-back contests in
Fort Worth. After the Niners went to the Lone Star State to get a win, UCF wasn't
quite as successful, dropping a 61-55 decision two days later.
The Knights lead the all-time series 2-1, picking up a 77-69 victory in the
last meeting, Nov. 25, 1995, at the UA Sheraton Capstone Inn Classic in
Tuscaloosa, Ala. The other two matchups have been played in Orlando with the
lone Charlotte triumph, an 85-71 win, coming Jan. 13, 1987.
