Sophomore guard Ayanna Holmes recently sat down with the Charlotte 49ers athletic media relations office and talked about her summer and the upcoming season. Last season, Holmes started 26 games at point guard. She scored the game-winning basket in the closing seconds of the 49ers win at George Washington.

How is your summer going? It's going good; we are getting better every day.

How is the  bonding experience with the team going? We have a feel for each other when we are playing, even with the incoming freshman; they have fit in with the rest of us real well.

What classes are you taking this summer? I am taking a First Aid class.

What are you planning on majoring in? Right now I'm not sure, it was pre-kinesiology, but I have decided that I am going to have to change that because of the conflict with the scheduling, but right now I am undecided.

Did you take the class in the first session? I took a Woman in Gender class.

You just completed your freshman year, how do you think that went? I think my freshman year went good.  I felt that I helped the program; I am looking forward to doing it again.

Now that you are a sophomore, do you feel you need to take on more of a leadership role this year and what are you working on to become more of a leader? I am working on being more vocal, understanding my teammates and leading by example.

What are your personal goals and the team's goals for this season? My personal goal is to become more confident in scoring and help my team on the defensive and offensive ends.  As for team goals, win the A-10, we feel like we really have a chance and just put our name on the map.

Who has been the biggest influence on your life? I would have to say my mother, Isha Holmes, because she has been there for me all the time no matter what the situation or what happens.  I can count on her; she has encouraged me to pursue basketball, as well as my twin sister, Ashia, who plays at Radford University.
