|49ers Play Penn State in the Charleston Classic|
The Charlotte 49ers men’s basketball team will play Big 10 foe Penn State in the first-round of the Charleston Classic, Thursday, November 20 at 5 pm. The game will be broadcast on ESPNU. The 49ers are participating in the Charleston Classic for the second time in school history. Charlotte played in the 2010 Charleston Classic.
Joining the 49ers and Penn State in the field for Charleston Classic are Akron, Cornell, Drexel, Miami (Fla.), Southern Cal and South Carolina.
This game will mark the third-ever meeting between Charlotte and Penn State. Charlotte won both of the previous meetings including a 76-67 win over Penn State on the road in their last meeting, December 17, 1983.
The 49ers enter the Charleston Classic with a six-game regular-season tournament winning streak after the capturing the 2012 Great Alaska Shootout and the 2013 Puerto Rico Tip-Off titles. The 49ers have won18 regular-season tournament titles in school history. Charlotte is 66-48 all-time in regular-season tournaments.
Charlotte will play either Cornell or South Carolina in their second game of the Charleston Classic, Friday, November 21. The 49ers have never played Cornell. Charlotte has played South Carolina three previous times. South Carolina leads the all-times series, 2-1; however, the 49ers defeated South Carolina 98-77 in Halton Arena in their last meeting, December 2, 2000.
The Charleston Classic will be played at the TD Arena in Charleston, South Carolina, Thursday, November 20, Friday, November 21 and Sunday, November 23. All the games in the Charleston Classic will be broadcast on either ESPN2, ESPNU or ESPN3.
Each team will play one game each day with the two teams that are undefeated after two days meeting in the championship game, Sunday, November 23 at 9:00 pm.
The 49ers men’s basketball program, which has averaged 19 wins over the last two seasons, returns 10 letterwinners and four starters from a squad that defeated top 15 Michigan to capture the 2013 Puerto Rico Tip-Off title.
