Charlotte, N.C. – Charlotte had two double-figure scorers and a career-high tying 16 rebounds by Willie Clayton but the 49ers (14-10, C-USA: 5-6) lost to Marshall (9-17, C-USA: 3-8), 59-56, in Halton Arena.

"We were uncharacteristic in a lot of ways,” Charlotte coach Alan Major said. “The game was more mental than it was physical. We clearly know we are a better basketball team then we played. Just a couple of mishaps and missed easy buckets and it snowballed from there. Offensively we were a little bit out of rhythm there were a bunch of easy ones we missed that we usually make.”

Shawn Lester recorded his 18th double-figure scoring game of the season with a team-high 16 points off the bench. Terrence Williams recorded his 12th double-figure scoring game with 14 points. Pierria Henry, who had a career-high 10 assists, recorded the 49ers first double-figure assists game since Derrio Green accomplished the feat against St. Bonaventure, January 8, 2011. Henry also grabbed nine rebounds. Clayton grabbed a career-high tying 16 rebounds in the game.

Charlotte’s bench behind the scoring Lester and Mike Thorne, who had seven points, finished the game with a 25-9 advantage in bench points.

With the game tied at eight with 15:07 on the clock, the 49ers behind the scoring of Denzel Ingram, who scored seven points, Williams, Thorne and Lester went on an 11-4 run over the next four minutes taking a 19-12 lead with 11:08 on the clock after Lester connected on a jump shot.

Charlotte pushed their lead to 30-19 when Marcus Bryan scored inside with 7:51 on the clock.

Marshall finished the first half on a 17-2 run taking a 36-32 halftime lead.

The 49ers scored the first five points of the second half taking a 37-36 lead when Lester scored inside with 18:13 on the clock.

Marshall went on a 14-4 run taking a 50-41 lead on DeVince Boykins’ tip-in with 12:09 on the clock.

Charlotte’s Lester scored five straight points cutting Marshall’s lead to 50-46. Marshall maintained a lead of 4-6 points until Lester knocked down a three from the corner with 21 seconds on the clock cutting Marshall’s lead to 59-56.

Charlotte’s defense forced a Marshall turnover. However, three-point field goal attempts by Lester and Henry in the final nine seconds were no good. Henry’s three rimmed out with four seconds on the clock.

Charlotte continues their three-game home stand when they play Middle Tennessee in Halton Arena, Thursday, February 20 at 7 pm.
