The Charlotte 49ers (13-7, Conference USA: 4-3) play FIU (11-10, C-USA: 3-3) in Halton Arena, Saturday, February 1 at 7 pm. The game will be broadcast in the Charlotte area on WCCB Charlotte.
Last time out, Charlotte defeated Florida Atlantic, 63-52, Thursday. Shawn Lester recorded a double-double with a career-high tying 24 points and 11 rebounds. Willie Clayton recorded his 19th straight double-figure scoring game with 13 points. He also grabbed seven rebounds. Pierria Henry scored nine points, grabbed eight rebounds and dished out seven assists. The 49ers defense held Florida Atlantic scoreless over the final 2:59 on the game.
Lester leads the team in scoring at 13 points per game. Henry is one of nine players in the nation and the only player in Conference USA that averages double-figure points (12.3 ppg) while averaging at least five rebounds (5.2 rpg) and five assists (6.1 apg) per game. Lester has recorded 14 double-figure scoring games off the bench this season. Willie Clayton (11.9 ppg) and Terrence Williams (10.9 ppg) round out the double-figure scorers. Clayton ranks 12th in the nation in double-doubles with ten. Mike Thorne averages 9.7 points and 6.8 rebounds per game. Denzel Ingram averages 8.5 points per game. Clayton leads Conference USA in offensive rebounds (4.15 per game). Ben Cherry leads Conference USA in three-point field goal percentage (49.3%). Ingram is fourth in Conference USA in three-point field goal percentage (43.9%). Clayton leads Conference USA in field goal percentage (62.8%). Marcus Bryan has given the 49ers solid production off the bench this season so far.
FIU enters the game having won two of their last three games. FIU has four players scoring in double-figures led by Tymell Murphy at 17 points per game. Rakeem Buckles averages 13 points and 8.9 rebounds per game.
Saturday’s game will mark the first-ever meeting between Charlotte and FIU.
