Charlotte, N.C. - The Charlotte 49ers men's basketball team will face Pfeiffer University in an exhibition game in Halton Arena, Thursday, November 1 at 7 pm. The 49ers are beginning their third season under Head Coach Alan Major.
"Guys have been beating up on each other in practice for a few weeks now," Charlotte coach Alan Major said. "Our guys are really excited to play another team in Halton Arena in front of our fans."
Charlotte returns three starters and eight letterwinners off last season's team led by preseason second-team All-Atlantic 10 selection senior Chris Braswell, junior guard DeMario Mayfield and preseason A-10 All-Defensive team selection sophomore Pierria Henry. Last season, Braswell led the 49ers in scoring (15.8 ppg) and rebounding (7.6 rpg) en route to earning third-team All-Atlantic 10 honors. Mayfield finished third on the team in scoring (11.2 ppg) and second on the team in rebounding (7.0 rpg) last year. Henry, who earned A-10 All-Rookie team honors, ranked among the nation's leaders in steals with 72. He also averaged 7.2 points per game while dishing out a team-high 96 assists.
Rounding out the 49ers returners are seniors Ilija Ivankovic, Colby Lewis and Lamar Bradbury and sophomores E. Victor Nickerson and Terrence Williams. Nickerson saw action in 30 games with four starts last year. While, Williams saw action in 29 games with two starts last year. Ivankovic, Lewis and Bradbury gave the 49ers quality minutes off the bench last year. Mike Thorne, who redshirted last season, will give the 49ers size and length this season.
Completing the 49ers roster are six talented newcomers: graduate student JT Thompson and freshmen Ivan Benkovic, Darion Clark, Willie Clayton, Denzel Ingram and Mitch Warner. Thompson will not play in the exhibition game for precautionary reasons. However, he is expected to play in the 49ers regular-season opener against Charleston Southern in Halton Arena on Friday, November 9 at 6 pm.
The 49ers began the 2008-09 season with an exhibition game in Halton Arena against Pfeiffer. The 49ers defeated Pfeiffer, 122-85. Lamar Bradbury, who played his freshman year at Pfeiffer, played against the 49ers that night.
