A bases-loaded single from senior third baseman Shane Basen (Waxhaw, N.C. / Marvin Ridge HS) broke open a two-all tie in the seventh as Charlotte completed a four-game sweep of visiting Youngstown State in game two of a Sunday doubleheader 5-2 at Robert and Mariam Hayes Stadium. Charlotte remained perfect at home (7-0) and improved to 8-2. Youngstown State has dropped seven in a row and sits at 2-10.

The 49ers took the first lead of the game with a run on two hits in the bottom of the second inning. A single through the right side of the infield with one out for sophomore second baseman Brad Elwood (Indian Trail, N.C. / Piedmont HS) got the inning started. He has a hit in all 10 games this season for Charlotte. A two-out single from junior first baseman Grant Dunnegan (Clearwater, Kan. / Hutchinson CC) with Elwood running scored his all the way from first for the game's first run.

The Penguins took the lead with a pair of runs in the top of the third. A double and a walk started the inning before a sacrifice moved the runners up and an intentional walk loaded the bases. A two-RBI single to left center from cleanup hitter Marcus Heath gave YSU their second lead of the series.

Charlotte was able to tie the game in the bottom half after a pair of errors, aided by a stolen base from senior outfielder Michael Green (Richmond, Va. / Thomas Dale HS), who scored the run, his fourth of the doubleheader.

The score remained tied as both pitching staffs posted zeros on the scoreboard in the middle three innings.

The 49ers broke through in the seventh. After a pitching change, the Penguins got two outs before a single from redshirt sophomore catcher Patrick Raley (Franklin, Tenn.) was followed by a double down the right field line from redshirt senior shortstop Justin Roland (Salisbury, N.C. / East Rowan HS) to put runners at second and third. A walk to Green loaded the bases for Basen, who turned a 3-2 pitch into an infield single with the runners in motion to score the go-ahead run. His hit extended his career-long hit streak to 19 games and moved to a perfect 3-for-3 and six RBI with the bases loaded this season. The 49ers are batting .438 (7-for-16) with a Niner at every base this season. A wild pitch later in the inning scored the fourth run for Charlotte.

Dunnegan drove in his second run of the game with a single to score Elwood, who was hit by a pitch, advanced to second on a failed pickoff attempt and got to third on a wild pitch.

Charlotte reliever Hunter May (Cornelius, N.C. / Pitt CC) allowed a hit to the first batter he faced in the fourth, but retired the next 10 in a row as the offense came to life for the win (3-0). He pitched 3.1 innings, striking out two in the victory.

Senior reliever Wes Hatley (Norwood, N.C. / South Stanly HS) got his second save in as many days in his fifth appearance of the season. He allowed a walk and recorded a strikeout in the ninth, getting a double play to end the game.

The loss went to YSU reliever Alex Frey. In two-thirds of an inning, he allowed a hit and two walks for his first loss of the season (0-1).

The 49ers continue the home stand Tuesday at noon, when Wake Forest travels to Charlotte.
