|Baseball Wins 20th Straight Home Series, 11-0|
Leadoff batter Shane Brown (Davidson, N.C. / North Mecklenburg HS) was 4-for-4, stole two bases and scored two runs as Charlotte won its home weekend series with Wagner 11-0 Sunday at Robert and Mariam Hayes Stadium. The 49ers took three of four over the weekend to win Charlotte's 20th consecutive home series of three or more games, dating back to 2009. Charlotte sits at 9-3 on the season, dropping Wagner to 1-8. The shutout is Charlotte's second of the season. The 49ers tied the school record with 11 in 2011.
Brown's two stolen bases gives him 12, which leads the Atlantic 10 Conference at this point, an average of exactly one per game in 2012. Brown also leads Charlotte with 16 runs scored. He took over the team lead in hits and batting average, now at .419 this season. He tied redshirt senior catcher Ross Steedley (Granite Quarry, N.C. / East Rowan HS), who had four hits yesterday for the most by a 49er in a game this season.
The 49ers put up three runs in the first inning on two hits and two walks, including a double from Steedley. Charlotte has scored 18 runs in first innings this season, tied with the seventh as their best output frames.
Charlotte added three more runs in the third with four hits, including doubles from redshirt junior outfielder Tony Montalbano (New Orleans, La.) and freshman second baseman Brad Elwood (Indian Trail, N.C. / Piedmont HS) for a 6-0 lead.
Starting pitcher Joe Yermal (Bel Air, Md. / McDonogh HS) cruised through five innings for his second win of the week (2-1). Yermal allowed just two hits and two walks, striking out three batters. He is third in the nation with 26 career victories. It was the second time in his 43 career starts in which the opponent did not score a run against him (Richmond, 5/7/11) and his second career combined shutout.
The 49ers tacked on a run in the six after Brown singled and managed to get to third after a sacrifice bunt and a balk. He came in on the third sacrifice fly of the weekend from Montalbano for a 7-0 lead.
Back-to-back two-RBI hits from first baseman Justin Seager (Kannapolis, N.C. / Northwest Cabarrus) and shortstop Justin Roland (Salisbury, N.C. / East Rowan HS) scored two more 49ers runs in the seventh.
A second Elwood double in the eighth drove in two more runs for Charlotte for the game's final run tally. He led all players with a career-high three RBI in the contest.
Wagner junior starting pitcher Dakota Dvorak took the loss (0-2). He allowed four earned in the first three innings on three walks and eight hits.
Charlotte's bullpen limited the Seahawks to one hit in the final four innings. Redshirt sophomore Jordan Hudson (Lexington, N.C. / West Davidson HS) retired all seven batters he faced, striking out a batter.
The 49ers will host Holy Cross Tuesday afternoon at 4 p.m.
