CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Redshirt junior Ryan Butler (Charlotte, N.C.) allowed just one hit in his six innings of work striking out seven as Charlotte blanked visiting Canisius 6-0 in a three-game series-opener on Friday afternoon. Butler carried a no-hitter into the sixth until a one-out single by Jesse Puscheck broke up the bid.

“It took him a little while to get going but that’s to be expected,” remarked Head Coach Loren Hibbs. “This is the first time he’s been in a division game in about three years. I thought our defense got better as the game went on and thought our older players played better today, more relaxed.”

Charlotte wasted little time in jumping on Canisius early as Des Roberts (Bellevue, Neb.) and Zach Jarrett (Hickory, N.C.) starting things off with back-to-back singles in the first. After a Griffs wild pitch, Brad Elwood (Indian Trail, N.C.) delivered a sacrifice-fly to left plating Roberts with the first run. Later in the frame, Brett Lang (Charlotte, N.C.) singled through the left side scoring Jarrett.

A one out double in the fourth by Corbin Shive (Salisbury, N.C.) and Canisius error led to a 3-0 Niners lead before a Matt Creech (Moultrie, Ga.) RBI single in the fifth helped extend the lead to five. The final blow for Charlotte came off the bat of Logan Sherer (Matthews, N.C.) as the freshman cranked his first home run of the season to left giving the Niners their final 6-0 margin. Sherer finished the home-opener 3-for-5 while Lang and Eric Eason (Wilmington, N.C.) each concluded with two.

Jordan Hudson (Lexington, N.C.) and Hunter May (Cornelius, N.C.) would help extend Butler’s shutout all the way as Hudson worked two innings allowing just two hits with three strikeouts. May wrapped things up in the ninth during a non-save situation with a pair of strikeouts.  The Griffs managed just four hits in the opener while Charlotte pounded out 12 for the second-straight contest.

The same two teams will now look ahead to the middle game of the weekend set on Saturday beginning at 1:00 p.m. A pair of right handers will toe the rubber as the Niners send Corey Roberts (0-0, 0.00) to the hill opposite Rohn Pierce (1-0, 0.00) for the Griffs.
