|White Wins in Ninth to Take Green/White Series|
Freshman Logan Sherer (Matthews, N.C. / East Mecklenburg HS) recorded an RBI groundout against a drawn-in infield in the top of the ninth for his third RBI to propel White to a 4-3 win and the series victory as the Green/White Niner World Series concluded Saturday afternoon at Robert and Mariam Hayes Stadium. The series finale signified the end of the fall team practice phase for Charlotte baseball.
White had gotten ahead with the first two runs of the game in the fourth inning when Sherer lifted a 1-2 fastball to left for a home run, driving in himself and freshman Zach Jarrett (Hickory, N.C.) for the game’s first runs.
The Green squad answered with a run in the bottom half when junior infielder Derek Gallello (Fredericksburg, Va. / Riverbend HS) singled in redshirt sophomore catcher Brett Lang (Charlotte, N.C. / Ardrey Kell HS) to cut the lead to a run.
Sherer hit a leadoff single in the seventh in the seventh and a bunt got him to second. Redshirt sophomore catcher Patric King (Indian Trail, N.C. / Piedmont HS) then singled over third base to push the White lead to 3-1.
Green was able to tie the game in the eighth with two runs. AN RBI single from junior Brad Elwood (Indian Trail, N.C. / Piedmont HS) started the scoring and Lang hit a sacrifice fly to tie the game at three runs each.
A Jarrett single was followed by a pair of wild pitches for Sherer, who drove in Garrett for his third RBI of the day and the series win.
White’s Hunter May (Cornelius, N.C. / Hopewell HS / Pitt CC) gave up the tying runs in the eighth, but got the win in the ninth. Freshman reliever Austin Wynn (Charlotte, N.C. / South Mecklenburg) got the save after throwing a perfect ninth, recording one strikeout.
The loss went to Weston Smith (Kannapolis, N.C. / Northwest Cabarrus HS) took the loss.
Neither starter factored in the decision. White’s Brock Hudgens (Jamestown, N.C. / Southwest Guilford HS) allowed three hits and a walk in four innings, with three strikeouts. Green’s Ryan Butler (Charlotte, N.C. / Ardrey Kell HS / NW Fla. CC) gave up two runs in five innings, with one walk and four hits allowed.
Jarrett led all players with three hits on the White side, while Gallello had two of Green’s five hits in the game to lead that side. Jarrett and Sherer scored twice each for the four White runs.
The 49ers begin the season next February 14th, with a home game against Youngstown State. The complete 2014 schedule will be released in the coming weeks.
