Veteran leadership at the plate was key in Green’s 9-3 game-one victory as junior Brad Elwood (Indian Trail, N.C. / Piedmont HS) and redshirt sophomore Brett Lang (Charlotte, N.C. / Ardrey Kell HS) each had three RBI in Thursday night’s Green/White Niner World Series.

Green scored the first three runs of the game, one in each of the first three innings, before White answered with an unearned run in the fourth. Green scored a pair of runs in the fifth and sixth innings to blow the contest open. Down 9-1, Shive and freshman Zach Jarrett (Hickory, N.C.) scored in the ninth as White salvaged two runs for the game’s final margin.

Lang got the RBI with a single in the first, driving in freshman T.J. Nichting (Hamilton, Ohio / Badin HS), who had single in the inning, for the 1-0 lead.

Catcher Patrick Raley (Franklin, Tenn.) singled to drive in infielder Derek Gallello (Fredericksburg, Va. / Riverbend HS), who had reached via a walk in the second.

In the third, Nichting again scored, again off the bat of Lang, who singled to left for the 3-0 lead for the Green team.

White answered after Corbin Shive (Salisbury, N.C. / East Rowan HS) was hit by a pitch with two outs in the fourth. An error allowed another baserunner, a wild pitch moved the runner up and another throwing error allowed the fourth-inning run to come across.

Nichting walked in the fifth and a triple from Elwood drove him in. Elwood later scored on a passed bal for a 4-1 Green lead.

Two walks and two wild pitches put a run across for Green in the fifth before an Elwood double pushed across the second run of the frame and Elwood singled in a run and Land hit a sacrifice fly, both in the eighth, as Green completed its scoring for the day.

Jarrett reached on an error for White in the top of the ninth before Shive singled two batters later. A double from freshman Logan Sherer (Matthews, N.C. / East Mecklenburg HS) drove in Jarrett before a sacrifice fly from freshman Danny Raley (Franklin, Tenn.) plated Shive for the final scoring play of the night.

Green takes the early lead in the best-of-three series, with freshman starter Brandon Vogler (Lewisville, N.C. / Reagan HS) getting the win after five innings, allowing one unearned run.

Elwood collected the game-high of three hits, with Lang and Nichting adding two hits each for the winning side. Nichting scored a game-high four runs.

White was led by redshirt senior Shive, who missed all of last season after Tommy John surgery in August of 2012. Shive scored two of White’s three runs, as he collected one of White’s three hits in the contest.

Junior Brett Bond (Overland Park, Kan. / Barton County CC) collected the save, tossing the final four innings for the Green pitching squad. He allowed two runs, only one earned, with two strikeouts.

The loss went to White freshman starter Matt Davis (Wilmington, N.C. / Ashley HS), who allowed three runs on five hits and a pair of walks in four innings. He struck out a game-high five batters in the contest.

Game two of the series is Friday afternoon at 5 p.m. at Robert and Mariam Hayes Stadium. The game is free to the public.
