|Roland Sets Record as Baseball Sweeps GW Sunday|
Charlotte scored two first-inning runs and held on to a 2-1 win to complete an Atlantic 10 Conference three-game weekend sweep over George Washington at Robert and Mariam Hayes Stadium Sunday. In the game, redshirt senior shortstop Justin Roland (Salisbury, N.C. / East Rowan HS) broke the school record by starting his 216th career contest. The 49ers are 22-13, 6-3 in the A-10. George Washington drops to 11-24, 5-7 in A-10 games.
Charlotte plated the first-inning runs on a pair of sacrifice flies after George Washington walked the bases loaded to start the inning. Sophomore Brad Elwood (Indian Trail, N.C. / Piedmont HS) and redshirt senior Tony Montalbano (New Orleans, La. / Bossier Parish JC) recorded the RBI in that frame to get Charlotte the lead that the pitching staff was able to hold up.
The Colonials nearly scored in the eighth, but reliever Hunter May (Cornelius, N.C. / Pitt CC) induced a ground ball double play with one out and the bases loaded to preserve the shutout.
GW got a hit and drew a walk to start the ninth, and scored an unearned run on a fielding error. The Colonials tried a squeeze bunt with one out and runners at the corners to tie the game, but reliever Ryan Mas (Matthews, N.C. / Butler HS) fielded it and flipped it to redshirt sophomore catcher Patrick Raley (Franklin, Tenn.) for the out and Mas got another grounder to end the game and earn his second save of the season.
Charlotte starter Brock Hudgens (Jamestown, N.C. / Southwest Guilford HS) was outstanding for the 49ers. In 7.1 shutout innings, he allowed just three hits and a walk, striking out five to earn his third win of the season (3-0).
The loss went to starter Brian Derner. He walked the bases loaded in the first without recording an out and was tagged with two earned runs in the contest. The bullpen was able to shut out the 49ers and strand 11 runners throughout the remainder of the game.
Charlotte designated hitter Brett Lang (Charlotte, N.C. / Ardrey Kell HS) had three hits for the 49ers, tying him with GW’s Justin Albright for the game-high total.
Charlotte will complete the current eight-game home stand against North Carolina State Tuesday at 6 p.m.
