|Justin Seager Earns Weekly A-10 Baseball Honor|
Charlotte's Justin Seager (Kannapolis, N.C. / Northwest Cabarrus HS) has been named the Atlantic 10 Baseball Player of the Week, league officials announced Monday, for games played March 11-17.
Justin Seager had hits in all five games for Charlotte this week, and holds a six-game hit streak, the longest active streak on the team as Charlotte swept a four-game weekend series against Siena. In midweek action, he led the 49ers and was one of just three players in the night to reach base three times in a home loss to now-ranked Virginia Tech.
The last of Seager's three hits Friday night in the Siena series-opener was a walk-off double to drive in the winning run in the ninth for his only RBI of the game. The double was his team and conference-leading 10th of the season. He was in the top five in nation in doubles as of the latest NCAA stats release. He collected two more hits and his only run of game one of a Saturday doubleheader was the game-winning run in the bottom of the eighth to break open a three-all tie in the 5-3 victory. His first hit of the second game of the twin bill was a two-run homer in the second to give the 49ers a 7-2 lead they never gave up. Sunday, he finished the weekend with a 3-for-3 day, tying his career high with four runs scored and tying his season high with a pair of walks to complete the sweep.
For the season, Seager leads the team with a .437 average, .690 slugging percentage, .535 on-base percentage, 10 doubles, two home runs, 23 runs scored and 21 RBI.
La Salle's Shawn O'Neil was named Pitcher of the Week and Fordham catcher Charles Galiano was named the league's Rookie of the Week.
Charlotte has won a weekly award in three of the five weeks of the season to this point. Senior third baseman Shane Basen (Waxhaw, N.C. / Marvin Ridge HS) earned Player of the Week after week two (2/25) and freshman Sean Geoghegan (High Point, N.C. / Southwest Guilford HS) captured Rookie of the Week last Monday.
The 49ers will start a six-game road trip Wednesday at 6 p.m. at Duke. The game will be played at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park. Charlotte will then head up to Richmond to battle the Spiders to open A-10 play, beginning Friday afternoon at Pitt Field, starting at 3 p.m.
