![]() The second home run of the season for Charlotte designated hitter Corbin Shive (Salisbury, N.C. / East Rowan HS) came too late for the 49ers as Dallas Baptist completed a three-game sweep in Charlotte by an 8-3 Saturday final at Robert and Mariam Hayes Stadium Saturday afternoon. The win pushes the Patriots to 13-6 on the season, dropping Charlotte to 10-10 in 2012. The Pats put up three in the first against starter Corey Roberts (Charlotte, N.C. / Olympic HS) before Shive hit a leadoff homer to left in the second inning. DBU scored two more in the third and another in the fourth on a solo homer from Austin Elkins for a 6-1 lead. The 49ers got one back in the bottom of the fifth inning. Shortstop Justin Roland (Salisbury, N.C. / East Rowan HS) and catcher Miguel Rodriguez (Cape Coral, Fla.) hit back-to-back singles to start the frame. After one walk to load the bases, third baseman Shane Basen (Waxhaw, N.C. / Marvin Ridge HS) drew another walk to drive in a run. The Patriots scored two more runs on a hit batter, a triple, a 49ers error and a single for the 8-2 margin. The 49ers tried to keep the comeback alive with a run in the eighth. First baseman Justin Seager (Kannapolis, N.C. / Northwest Cabarrus HS) was hit by a pitch with one out, followed by a walk to Roland. Following a popout, outfielder Shane Brown (Davidson, N.C. / North Mecklenburg HS) grounded an RBI single through the left side of the infield for the third and final run of the day for Charlotte. Roberts took the loss (1-3). He lasted two and one-third innings, allowing five hits and a walk, with three strikeouts. The win went to reliever Jordan Staples, who tossed three effective innings in the middle of the contest. Three 49ers had a pair of hits. Five Patriots collected a pair of hits. Charlotte stranded 12 runners on base in the game and 29 in the three-game series. The 49ers host Winthrop Wednesday night at 6 p.m. before starting Atlantic 10 Conference play at Rhode Island next weekend. NOTES: Charlotte has not been swept in a three-game series since a road sweep March 27-29 in the 2009 season... The home sweep was the first at Robert and Mariam Hayes Stadium (opened March 31, 2007)... The last time the 49ers were swept at home was against No. 2 Tulane April 8-10, 2005. |
