|Bats Come Alive Late as Charlotte is Eliminated from Postseason, 11-3 to No. 19 Arkansas|
No. 19 Arkansas scored four runs in the first and eliminated Charlotte from the NCAA Postseason, 11-3 at the Tempe, Ariz. Regional at Packard Stadium, hosted by Arizona State University Sunday.
The 49ers got a pair of RBI by freshman designated hitter Justin Seager, including a solo home run in the fifth in the comeback attempt. It was his third home run of the season, down the right field line to lead off the inning. Charlotte ends its season 43-16, the same finishing record in 2008, and better than a 70 percent win percentage for the third time in the past five seasons. Arkansas is 40-21 and takes on the Sun Devils at 9 p.m. Eastern, needing to win tonight to force a winner-take-all Regional championship game tomorrow night.
Arkansas freshman pitcher Ryne Stanek tossed his first career complete game with temperatures approaching 103 degrees, saving the Razorbacks bullpen for their meeting with ASU tonight in the desert.
Outfielders Shane Brown (Davidson, N.C. / North Mecklenburg HS) and Justin Wilson (Canton, N.C. / Pisgah HS) had two hits each and scored the other two runs in the game for the 49ers. Brown set a school postseason record with three stolen bases in the contest.
Charlotte won its third postseason game on Friday in the Regional's opening game, taking out the Razorbacks by a 3-2 final. The Hogs got their payback with seven runs to start the game before the 49ers could answer.
Redshirt junior Joe Yermal, tying the school mark by starting his second postseason game, took the loss after allowing six earned runs in four innings. He struck out five and fell to 6-3 on the year.
Following the conclusion of the last game of the night, Charlotte pitcher Andrew Smith and first baseman Corbin Shive were named to the All-Regional Team.
NOTES: The loss was just the sixth for the 49ers when scoring three or more runs (41-6), and just the fifth time that Charlotte allowed an opponent to score 10 or more runs (1-4), which happened for the second time this weekend... Charlotte's final record when the opponent scored first evened to 12-12 on the season... Reliever Bryan Hamilton appeared in his fourth postseason game, the most for any pitcher in Charlotte history... The 49ers fell to 1-1 in postseason games with the chance to advance to the Regional Final, eliminating N.C. State in a similar situation in 2007.
