A seven-run third inning keyed Charlotte's three-game sweep of Buffalo in a 12-4 baseball victory at Robert and Mariam Hayes Stadium on Sunday. The 49ers improve to 4-2 on the season, with a 4-1 home mark. Buffalo drops to 0-3 on their season-opening weekend series.
Charlotte scored first for the first time in the series when Cory Tilton (Cary, N.C. / Green Hope HS) doubled with one out. After a walk and another out, third baseman Kevin Gillespie (Bedford, Ind.) drove him home on a single through the left side of the infield for another two-out RBI. Charlotte drove in seven runs with two outs in the game, with 15 runs coming in with two outs in the series.
Buffalo took the lead in the top of the third with three runs against Charlotte starter Tim Lysaught (Shawnee, Kan.), who gave up three hits and a walk in the inning. Outfielder David Neff drove in the tying run on a ground out and third baseman Jacob Rosenbeck gave the Bulls the lead with a two-out, two-RBI double down the third base line.
The Niners batted around in the bottom half as Charlotte reached base nine times on four hits, three walks, a hit batter and an error. Four different players drove in a run in the inning, including Gillespie's two-RBI double to left center, and outfielder Justin Wilson (Canton, N.C. / Pisgah HS) walked twice in the inning.
Buffalo got a run back in the fifth, while Charlotte put up lone runs in the fourth and fifth, and added two more in the eighth on a two-RBI single by shortstop Justin Roland (Salisbury, N.C. / East Rowan HS).
Lysaught earned his first win of the season (1-2). He allowed six hits over six innings, striking out five and walking two. He gave up all four runs by Buffalo in the game. Three Charlotte relievers combined to allow one hit over the final three innings, with each one recording one strikeout.
Buffalo starter Brian Pullybank was charged with six runs on five hits and three walks in 2.2 innings and took the loss for the Bulls (0-1). All three Bulls pitchers that came in gave up a run. All 10 pitchers that appeared in the series for Buffalo gave up at least one run.
Gillespie and Roland recorded three RBI each, with Gillespie's three hits the game-high total. Tilton scored a game-high three runs for Charlotte as he reached base in all five trips to the plate in the game.
The 49ers head to Greensboro on Tuesday for their lone mid-week game at North Carolina A&T at 3 p.m.
NOTES: Of Charlotte's 39 RBI on the season, 24 of them have come with two outs... Charlotte has scored with two outs in 28 of 45 total runs scored in 2010... First baseman Ryan Rivers has a team-high eight walks this season. He has drawn three walks in two different games and at least one walk four times. He leads Charlotte with a .474 batting average and a .630 on-base percentage.
